Who I was, Who I am

“The list of things I used to be is longer than the list of things I am…”

Dessa, from the song “Mineshaft”

When this lyric flew through the wire from my computer to my headphones, out of the cans and into both sides of my head, I wondered pretty instantly if that was a statement I could actually claim. Initially, I would say yes.

And then I thought, “Well, surely you are a great many things…”

Barring the actual attempt to list the many things that I am vs. the very many things I used to be, I’m not sure I fully know.

Which begs the question:
Is the list of things you used to be longer than the list of things you are?

  1. I think that statement is pretty true for me. I believe that most people spend a lot of time in their youth trying on different hats. Dabbling in one thing or another long enough to decide if it’s “you” or not. Personally, I feel like I’m still doing that from time to time. But at some point we start to figure out who we are and focus our energy on that instead of trying to be something else.
